A Snook's Bio

With spring about to kick off a lot of anglers in Tampa Bay are looking forward to the in suing snook spawning period... This is because snook are some of the most powerful and hardest fighting inshore species of fish that you can go after due to their strength and speed. They are also extremely elusive and their feeding habits are hard to target because one day they'll eat shrimp and the next you'll only catch them on artificial lures.

The best time to go after snook is when they're hanging around passes and deeper holes during this spawning period. The spring-summer spawn usually begins during the full moon of May, but sometimes doesn't get really good until June. In any case, snook can be caught year round in the Western Atlantic area's of the United States stretching from the beaches of South Carolina clear down to coastal Brazilian regions because they are an extremely resilient fish species that can handle a wide range of salinity in both fresh and saltwaters. They are however very extremely volatile to cold water temperatures. Water temps of 60 deg F or lower can send snook into shock or even kill them. A couple years ago the Tampa Bay area had one of these freezes and the effect on the snook population was devastating. Dead snook were floating in canals in the area everywhere. During colder times of the year can also be a great time to catch snook because they tend to congregate in warmer waters. A popular spot to find them during cold times of the year is around power plants due to the warm water discharges they pump out. Backwater canals, inlets, and shorelines also are good places to seek the elusive snook due to the warmer waters and protection available in these areas such as mangroves, rocks, reefs, and other structures they can hide in. Some of the common baits you'll want to use are live bait such as shrimp, mullet, menhaden, pin fish, threadfins on a 1/0 or 2/0 hook. Use a split shot or light weight to get your bait down to the bottom of deeper holes. Mirrolures or DOA clear shrimp are great artificial alternatives as well. Hope this helps you catch some more snook!
